In April 2004, after serving eight years at Songs of Joy Home for Children, Myra began a new ministry in Chiquimula, Guatemala to help poor women and their families. The ministry is called Ministerio Comedor y Educación de Paz. She also started a church called “Dios es Nuestra Paz” (God is our Peace).
The ministry meets during the week with a Bible club for children 11 and younger, computer classes, help with homework, Women’s Bible study and adult education classes at night. On the weekends there are youth meetings, church services and adult education classes for the elementary level. The majority of the ladies cannot read or write. They come from near and as far away as a hour and a half walk. Food such as rice, beans and corn is given our monthly to supplement the monthly diet of each family as well as clothing and shoes.
Scholarships are also given out to help the children to study. Many had not been able to study because of the cost. School is “free” but has many costs. The scholarships cover school uniform, shoes, gym uniform, tennis, school supplies, and food and transportation for the school year.
Since 2011 adult education classes have been held for students 13 and older who can complete Elementary school in 3 years. Then in 2013 Classes began nightly during the week for students 15 and older to enable them to complete Junior High school in 2 years.
We hope in the future to provide medical and dental care on site to benefit the community.
